At Patcraft, we offer more than a dozen resilient solutions with hundreds of patterns and colors to ensure that you are able to specify the right product for your space. All of our platforms have performance characteristics engineered to best meet the needs of a space including the ability to hold up to heavy foot traffic and rolling loads, and hold up against scratches and scuffs. While the overall construction may vary slightly among different resilient platforms, our resilient layered construction is designed to perform from top to core.
The backing layer determines how a product may be installed. There are numerous types of backings available today, including non-skid for loose lay installations; cork or foam underlayment - which aid in sound reduction and can be installed as floating or glue down; and vinyl composite for glue down.
The core is where the bulk of the product durability, dimensional stability, insulation and comfort lie. Typically comprised of blown foam, a wood polymer composite (WPC), solid polymer composite (SPC), and/or vinyl composite, the core is the most influential on the overall thickness of the flooring. Overall thickness of resilient floorings are measured in millimeters (mm) which is approximately 1/32 of an inch thick.
The print film, or decorative design layer, is the visual component of the product and contains the color and pattern. Lighter visuals can often hide any light scratches that may occur on a product, while darker visuals may make such scratches easier to see. On the contrary, darker visuals will more easily hide any stains and scuffs that may get on a product, while lighter visuals will make stains and scuffs more prominent. This is an important item to consider when determining what colors will work best in the end-use environment.
Protecting the print film is the wear layer, which also plays an influential role in determining where a product may be suited for installation. Wear layer is a clear, plastic film that is measured in mil (1/1000 of an inch). Residential applications often utilize 6 mil or 8 mil; light commercial environments use 12 mil; and heavy commercial uses anything 20 mil or higher. The thicker the wear layer, the more work it will take to get through to the print film and damage the visual.
The top coat provides added performance to resilient products, providing even more durability to the product. In addition to light-fastness to ensure the product color will not fade over time, a top coat can help perform against scratches, stains and scuffs.
Understanding the overall construction of resilient will help to ensure that the correct product is specified for a space.
